Theatron's 20th anniversary

07.07.2026

From a talk at a trade fair to a trusted planning tool for theatres across Europe - Theatron is turning 20!

This year, our theatre planning software Theatron celebrates two decades in action. We already kicked off the celebrations in May with some of our customers in Helsinki - now let's take a look back at what we have achieved!

20 years, by the numbers

To mark the occasion, we dug into Theatron's own data to see what two decades of theatre planning actually looks like.

175,000+ Performances planned in Theatron since the beginning (cancelled and not)
~9,000 Average number of performances planned per year - up from under 1,000 in the early days
13,000+ Performances planned by a single long-standing customer
950 vs. 80 The highest and lowest number of performances planned by a single theatre in the 2024/2025 season

That last comparison says a lot about who we work with: from big houses to small stages, Theatron is built to support theatres of every size.

Supporting what happens behind the scenes

Performances are of course what audiences see, but behind every one of them is a huge amount of planning, coordination, and work that keeps a theatre running smoothly. Supporting that behind-the-scenes process has always been at the heart of what Theatron does, and over the years, that support has grown.

One of the biggest additions has been individualized work hour calculations, built for customers who wanted to fold Theatron into how they manage staff hours. The work hours acceptance module born from this is now used by over half of our customers, a good sign we got it right.

Alongside this, we have carried out several other bigger development projects. These include iCal feeds, InfoTV views built individually for customers, web forms for residencies and other external projects, and SMS sending through Theatron's intranet. User login authentication based on Entra ID has already been available for a while and more recently, a bigger development project has focused on integrating Theatron with M365 calendars. This development enables a real-time synchronization of planned events, work hours and absences from Theatron, bringing it even closer to the everyday tools theatres already use.

To support theatres in digitalizing their resource management, aRMaS was also developed and integrated into Theatron. aRMaS is a separate system where theatres can manage resources such as technical equipment, props, and costumes. Events, such as shows and rehearsals from Theatron, are shown in aRMaS, and bookings of resources are shown in Theatron, keeping the whole process connected.

Our customers make Theatron what it is

These are just some of the development projects we have carried out over the years. Many others have come directly from customer requests, big or small, and that close collaboration continues to shape Theatron today.

Today, we work with around 40 customers in 9 different countries. It's our joy to support theatres across Europe, and the versatile ways of working we've encountered along the way have brought real richness to Theatron.

It's fitting, in a way, since Theatron itself started from a wish to centralize production planning, and it's stayed true to that spirit ever since, shaped every step of the way by insight and practice from the theatre world itself.

Looking ahead

Our roadmap keeps building on that same idea: supporting theatres in their everyday work. Right now, we're focused on making in-house communication even smoother, and exploring new ways, including a dedicated Theatron app, to help theatre staff get the information they need, faster. And it's not just us looking ahead, many theatres are already planning their upcoming seasons in Theatron:

10,000+ Performances already planned for next season
~1,400 Performances already planned for 2027/28 by our earliest planners

Seeing theatres plan this far ahead is a good reminder of what Theatron is really about: giving theatres a reliable place to plan, today and well into the future. That's what we've aimed for over the last 20 years, and it's what we'll keep building toward, supporting theatres of every size, for many years to come.
